COMMENTSStar Trek Beyond, feels like the most "Trekkie" of the new Trek films. While some moviegoers may be turned off by that initial notion, die hard fans will welcome the turn for the new franchise. The most poignant thing happening in this film, are the actors. Watching how much the cast has settled into their roles, and grown since we first saw them in 2009, is great to watch. Beyond offers a fun romp with the Enterprise crew, and their interactions are what sell it. Sofia Boutella, is great as Jaylah too. Idris Elba, brings his usual gravitas to the villain, even if he feels a little one note. While there is plenty to have fun with in Beyond, the flick does tend to meander a bit. The plot is thin, and at times, it feels like the film is stretching. Still, Star Trek Beyond is a lot of fun, and offers some great spectacle and thrills, for the summer blockbuster season.

COMMENTSGhostbusters, is a cautionary tale about how the internet ruins everything. Yes, in this case, it isn't Hollywood ruining anything. While the film isn't a masterpiece, and it certainly isn't anywhere near as good as the original, Ghostbusters is solid summer cinema. It's funny, colorful, and pure entertainment. The film is fun escapism for the summer sun. The four leads are perfect together, each playing off each other nicely. Kate McKinnon, is a hoot and is so much fun to watch. McCarthy and Wiig, ground the team nicely, and Leslie Jones is fantastic. Chris Hemsworth, is hysterical as well, and is quite charming here. That being said, the cast is what holds this film together. The story leaves a little to be desired, and the villain is pretty weak. This is a comedy as well, and not all the jokes are going to land. The fan-service doesn't always work either. However, there are some really funny set-pieces at play here. I actually quite enjoyed the finale as well. Surprisingly, the 3D is really effective too. While overall, the film has a few bumpy patches, Ghostbusters is actually one of the better reboots Tinseltown has churned out. It's a lot of fun.
COMMENTSI wanted to love this film so much. Alas, I love it, but not in the way I wanted. While the first Independence Day is finely crafted schlock, Resurgence is just schlock. There is some awful stuff in this film. Unlike its predecessor, Resurgence doesn't have the charm to elevate what could be taken as awful, to sheer entertainment. The young cast, can't do it; even though, I actually like Hemsworth in this film. The older cast, is basically phoning it in, or just walking by the camera for a useless cameo. Goldblum, is doing his best Goldblum impression. Resurgence attempts to go full B-movie, as opposed to the first, which used the style as influence. In a way, that is why I kind of love what Resurgence does. It just gets weird. Weird, and dumb. The last hour of Resurgence had me grinning, and I really couldn't believe they were going there. And I honestly want to see where this could possibly go. That counts for something.
